This invention gained international attention in 1916 when Morgan used it to help rescue workers trapped in a tunnel explosion beneath Lake Erie. Despite the lifesaving success of the device, Morgan faced racial prejudice that often forced him to downplay his identity to promote his work.

Another lasting contribution was Morgan’s invention of an improved traffic signal. At a time when road accidents were becoming increasingly common, his design introduced a warning phase between “stop” and “go,” helping reduce collisions and improve road safety. This concept later became a foundation for modern traffic control systems used around the world today.
