Keeping Hope Alive: Smiles for the Children Outreach at City of Refuge, Ilorin

December is often described as a season of joy, reflection, and giving. For the children at the City of Refuge Orphanage in Ilorin, Kwara State, this December became one they will remember for a very long time. Through the Smiles for the Children programme organised by LAFFoundation (Lydia Ajoke Ogun Foundation), laughter filled the air, hearts were warmed, and hope was renewed.

The Smiles for the Children initiative is a yearly December outreach by LAFFoundation, designed to bring happiness, care, and encouragement to children, especially those in vulnerable situations. Each year, the programme serves as a reminder that every child deserves love, attention, and moments of genuine joy, regardless of their circumstances.

This year’s outreach at the City of Refuge Orphanage was nothing short of beautiful. From the moment the team arrived, the children’s excitement was visible. Their smiles came easily, their laughter was contagious, and their energy set the tone for a day filled with fun and connection. It was not just another visit; it was an experience that allowed the children to feel seen, valued, and deeply cared for.

One of the most touching aspects of the programme was the distribution of gifts. The children received different items carefully prepared to bring delight and comfort. Beyond the physical gifts, what stood out most was the joy on their faces, the kind of joy that comes from knowing that someone thought about them, planned for them, and showed up just for them. The atmosphere was filled with games, conversations, shared laughter, and moments that reminded everyone present why such initiatives matter.

The success of the programme was made possible through the dedication of committed volunteers who gave their time, strength, and hearts to serve. These volunteers included Inioluwa Samuel, Fabohunda Oluwasegun, Olateju Favour, Bodunde Christianah Temitope, Mathew Blessing Iyiola, and Gabriel Joshua. Each of them played an important role in ensuring the children were engaged, comfortable, and happy throughout the event. Their selfless contribution reflected the true spirit of service and compassion that LAFFoundation stands for.

The entire programme was thoughtfully coordinated by Salawu Oluwaseun Moses, whose leadership and organisation ensured that every part of the event ran smoothly. From planning to execution, the focus remained clear: to create a safe, joyful, and memorable experience for the children.

At the heart of LAFFoundation’s work are its co-founders, Barrister Adedayo Alli, Miss Lydia Ibinike Osinowo and Abimbola Adetoke Alli. Their commitment to children’s welfare continues to shape the foundation’s vision and impact. Through their sponsorship and unwavering support, programmes like Smiles for the Children are made possible year after year. Their shared goal is simple yet powerful, to keep children’s hope alive. They believe that when children are supported, encouraged, and loved, they are better positioned to dream, grow, and build brighter futures. This commitment is not seasonal; it is ongoing, and it reflects in every outreach the foundation undertakes.

The December outreach at City of Refuge was more than a programme, it was a reminder of what community, kindness, and consistency can achieve. For the children, it was a day of happiness and connection. For the volunteers, it was a chance to give back meaningfully. For LAFFoundation, it reaffirmed the importance of staying committed to its mission.

As Smiles for the Children continues as an annual December programme, LAFFoundation remains dedicated to spreading love, restoring hope, and putting genuine smiles on children’s faces, one outreach at a time.

LAFFoundation remains open to partnerships and support from individuals and organisations who share our vision of giving every child a reason to smile
